Shortly after Nigerian Doctor called out Olamide for sharing photos with Nitro Cannisters in the background, NDLEA begins nationwide clampdown.
A statement released by National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA ) Femi Babafemi on July 11, explains that Nitrous Oxide otherwise known as Laughing gas is a colourless gas that is commonly used for sedation and pain relief more often by dentists and medical practitioners to sedate patients undergoing minor surgeries. But the popularlly called laughing gasor N20, is fast becoming a drug in demand by Nigerian young partying or fun seeker to feel high. The gas is often transferred from it's containers into balloons from where it's inhaled for euphoric effects.
The Chairman and chief executive Officer of NDLEA Brigadier General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd) has therefore directed all commands and formation of NDLEA nationwide to begin immediate clampdown on illegal sales and use of Nitrous oxide due to its abuse by people.
The NDLEA in a statement, stated that the decision to clampdown on the illegal users of Laughing gas is because of the effect of the drug on those drug users which include dizziness, disorientation,constant headache, light headedness, fainting spells, hallucinations, unconsciously and sometimes suffocating due to lack of oxygen and many other neurological complications especially psychiatric symptoms.
The Agency said it will continue to weld a big stick on anyone involved in illegal distributing and using of these drugs no matter the social status pending when other measures are taken by Stakeholders especially, the Federal Ministry of health to bring up other measures to curb this menace to our society.
The Agency therefore urged parents, guardians and other stakeholders to be vigilant on the activities of their young ones and warn them against experimenting or abuse of any drug or substance capable of causing damage to their mental health and overall well-being
