A wave of grief has swept through Owaelu community in Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State following the tragic discovery of the lifeless body of a woman on the premises of a church, in what police suspect to be a case of domestic violence.
According to the Imo State Police Command, the deceased was allegedly killed by her husband, who fled the scene with two of their children, leaving behind a helpless suckling baby.
The heartbreaking incident, discovered on Monday morning, has thrown the community into mourning as residents struggle to come to terms with the shocking loss of the woman and the uncertainty surrounding the whereabouts of the two missing children.
Police disclosed that the abandoned nursing baby was rescued and has been handed over to a trusted family relative for proper care.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Owerri North Divisional Headquarters visited the scene immediately after the incident was reported and has commenced a full-scale investigation.
The Imo State Police Command said a coordinated operation is underway to apprehend the fleeing suspect and safely rescue the two children believed to be in his custody.
The Command appealed to members of the public to remain calm and assist security agencies with any useful information that could lead to the suspect's arrest. As investigations continue, the tragedy has once again raised concerns over domestic violence and the devastating impact it has on families and innocent children.
