A dramatic incident has unfolded on an Ibom Air flight from Uyo to Lagos, leaving a trail of controversy and outrage in its wake. The incident, which was captured on video and widely shared on social media, shows Ms. Comfort Emmanson being forcefully removed and partially exposed before a crowd at Murtala Muhammed Airport 2 in Lagos.
According to eyewitness David Ogebe, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), who was seated beside Emmanson during the pre-departure events, the trouble started when one of the hostesses, referred to as Hostess 2, approached Emmanson and asked her to switch off her phone. Emmanson, who was having difficulty understanding her device's prompts, politely explained her situation to Hostess 2, but was met with condescension and humiliation.
"I noticed thereafter that Miss. Emmanson was fiddling with her phone with some uncertainty," Ogebe said. "Hostess 2 came with an almighty huff and told Miss. Emmanson to switch off her phone with a very high voice. Miss. Emmanson in a low voice tried to explain to hostess 2 that the buttons on her phone for switch off were not working so she did not know how to switch off the phone."
Ogebe described how Hostess 2's behavior escalated the situation, leading to Emmanson's angry outburst and eventual removal from the Emmanson from the plane.
"I do not condone or endorse the acts of violence and disorderliness exhibited by Miss. Emmanson as seen in various videos circulating in the media space," Ogebe said. "It is not justified. Unjustified humiliation and provocation by Ibom Air hostess... Ibom Air needs to do better in training their staff to learn to be sensitive and empathetic where necessary."
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for Ibom Air to take responsibility for the actions of its staff. The Federal Government has also intervened, with Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo announcing that all criminal charges against Emmanson had been withdrawn, securing her release from Kirikiri Prison.
In a related development, Fuji star Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (KWAM1), who was earlier placed under an indefinite flight ban for a separate aviation infraction, has had his penalty reduced to a one-month suspension.
The incident has raised questions about the treatment of passengers by airline staff and the need for greater empathy and understanding in such situations. As the aviation industry continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how airlines will prioritize passenger safety and well-being.
