The Imo State Government has announced that it will begin demolishing the Old Timber Market on Wethdral Road tomorrow, March 25, 2025. This decision comes after a 21-day ultimatum to vacate the premises expired.
According to reports, the government, through the Owerri Capital Development Authority (OCDA), aims to clear the area due to concerns over alleged criminal activities. These activities include gunrunning, drug peddling, and other unlawful practices that have allegedly turned the market into a breeding ground for crime.
The traders were officially relocated to the Naze Industrial Market years ago, but some have refused to comply with the relocation directive. Despite this, the government has reiterated its commitment to developing the state and ensuring the safety and security of its citizens.
In a final visit to the market, the General Manager of OCDA, Hon. Frank Nkem, reminded traders of the need to vacate the premises. This visit served as a last-minute reminder to traders to comply with the government's directive.
The demolition exercise is expected to commence today Tuesday the 25th of March 2025, and traders are advised to remove their belongings and vacate the premises to avoid any losses. The government's decision to demolish the market is seen as a necessary step towards restoring order and ensuring the safety of citizens in the area.
