The recent marriage between Nomcebo Zuma, 21, daughter of former South African President Jacob Zuma, and King Mswati III of Eswatini has sparked controversy. The king, 56, has been married 15 times and has 11 wives in a polygamous arrangement.
Eswatini spokesman Alpheous Nxumalo defended the marriage, saying it was based on love, not politics. However, critics argue that the king's luxurious lifestyle contrasts with the poverty and high HIV/Aids rates in Eswatini.
The marriage has raised eyebrows due to the significant age difference between Nomcebo and the king. King Mswati III has previously faced criticism for marrying young brides, including a 17-year-old in 2005.
Jacob Zuma, Nomcebo's father, has also faced controversy, resigning as president over corruption allegations. He has multiple wives and is believed to have 20 children.
The marriage highlights the strong traditional ties between Eswatini and South Africa's Zulu monarchy, with the current Zulu king being King Mswati III's nephew.
