A five-storey building owned by Senator Rochas Okorocha, former Governor of Imo State, has collapsed in Abuja. The building, located along Ahmadu Bello Way, was undergoing renovation when it collapsed on Tuesday the second day of July 2024, evening. Eyewitnesses report that security operatives from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command promptly cordoned off the area, and rescue efforts are ongoing.
According to eyewitness accounts, multiple individuals may be trapped inside the collapsed building, with two persons already pulled out and taken to the hospital. However, the FCT Police Command has confirmed that three persons were rescued and are receiving medical attention.
The Command's spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, issued a statement stating, "The FCT Police Command confirms that on July 1, 2024, at approximately 8:40 p.m., a building collapsed at Unity House, Area 11 by Nkwere Street. The Commissioner of Police, CP Benneth C. Igweh, promptly responded to the scene with multiple patrol teams to cordon off the area and facilitate rescue efforts. Three victims were successfully evacuated and rushed to the hospital for medical care."
